When I first spawned on the island of the original Forest game, I thought I was just roleplaying as a character from LOST; however, after salvaging what I could from the plane fuselage and starting to build my crude shelter, a cold sinking feeling shot into the pit of my stomach.
I saw them through the break of the forest. Sons of the Forest captures that feeling but turns it up on overdrive. The game wastes no time establishing that Site B island is not as natural as it seems.
The introduction shows your character with military experience, and the objectives are clear; find the Puffton family and discover what happened to the Puffton Corporation on Site B.
To explore the abandoned facilities and bunkers on the island, you will need to retrieve three keycards, and luckily, I unveil them all in this Sons of the Forest Keycard Locations guide.
You won’t be able to progress through the story if you don’t find these cards. Luckily, I’ve explored every inch of the caves and bunkers to bring you the three keycards.
However, knowing where they are is only half of the battle. You must pick up the Shovel from the Shovel Cave and fight through an army of mutants.
Key Details Up Front
Here are all the essential details you need to know about scooping up the three Keycards in Sons of the Forest:
- The Maintenance Keycard is found in Maintenance Bunker A.
- The VIP Keycard is found in the Food and Dining Bunker.
- The Guest Keycard is found in the Entertainment Bunker.
You must obtain the keycards in order. I recommend that you take the time to collect all weapons and equipment from each cave in Sons of the Forest before going after the Guest Keycard. You will need the following items before you can begin collecting keycards:
- Rebreather:Â Found in the northwest beach cave next to the beach helicopter crash spawn. The Rebreather is required to explore the Shovel Cave and escape the Food and Dining Bunker.
- Rope Gun:Â Found in the lakeside cave by the Stun Baton and forest helicopter crash site. The Rope Gun is used to get passed the mountainside Shovel Cave entrance.
- Shovel:Â The Shovel is found in the mountainside cave, close to the mountain helicopter crash site. You will need the Shovel to dig up the Maintenance Bunker hatch to get the Maintenance Keycard.
Where To Find The Maintenance Keycard
- Found in Maintenance Bunker A and requires the Shovel to dig up the entrance to the bunker.
Tripods and a couple of golf carts mark the Maintenance Bunker entrance. If you’re playing in hard mode.
Generally, it’s a good idea to build near the bunker entrance since you’ll be returning to Maintenance Bunker A in the future to stock up on supplies or take a break from the horrors of the island.
Once the hatch has been unearthed, descend into the bunker, your only threat in the bunker is a small group of Baby Mutants located in the storage room.
These Baby Mutants will spawn back after some time, so check the room every time you visit the bunker. Otherwise, you’re completely safe here, so make yourself at home.
You’ll find many valuable items in the storage room, such as Solar Panels, Light Bulbs, and Printer Resin.
Maintenance Keycard Location
- The Maintenance Keycard is on the desk next to the 3D Printer in Maintenance Bunker A. Now it’s time to head to the Food and Dining Bunker to retrieve the VIP Keycard.
Where To Find The VIP Keycard
- The VIP Keycard is found in the Food and Dining Bunker and requires you to own the Maintenance Keycard to access the deeper parts of the bunker.
You will find the entrance to the Food and Dining Bunker in the northwest part of the map by following the west estuary east into the island and taking the northern path.
A couple of golf carts mark the bunker’s entrance (seriously, Endnight Games, when are you going to let us drive one of these rides?).
Before you enter the bunker acquiring the Shotgun found at the northwest purple icon is a good idea. You will need medical supplies, armor, weapons, and explosives to make it through this bunker, as you have to fight a mini-boss.
Entering the Food and Dining Bunker, you will follow a cave tunnel down to the bunker’s hatch. Descend the ladder to reach the food storage area.
Using the Maintenance Keycard, open up the secured door on the right-hand side of the room to enter the hydroponics area. You’re at risk of being attacked by mutants in this area.
Fingers mutants will roam the following room’s exit. However, the narrow area allows you to quickly kill it with traps or molotovs.
In the second hydroponics room, you will find several dead bodies with arrows sticking out of them, a crossbow, and more survival items. The Crossbow is one of the best weapons in the game. It will one-shot-kill most cannibals if you shoot them in the head.
The VIP Keycard Location
After picking up the Crossbow, you will be led to a flooded room, you won’t need the Rebreather in this area, but the wetsuit could come in handy.
This area is linear, so work through the flooded bunker until you reach a long corridor. You will want to enter the door on the lefthand side of the corridor to get to the security room. In this area, you will find lots of computers and monitors.
You’ll find the VIP Keycard on the front desk below the monitors displaying the mutant transformation of Edward and Barbara Puffton. With the VIP Keycard in hand, you can unlock the secured door at the end of the previous corridor to open the dining room.
Be very careful entering the dining room as you will be attacked by a dozen puffy mutants along with Edward Puffton and Barbara Puffton, both unique mutants that can jump attack you and move super fast.
Where To Find The Guest Keycard
- The Guest Keycard is in the Entertainment Bunker, marked by a broken-down golf cart nearby the forest helicopter crash. You will need the VIP Keycard to unlock the gym area and work your way to the Guest Keycard.
A word of warning, if this was the film Aliens (1986), the Entertainment Bunker would be the Xenomorph hive. A high number of nasties roam around from groups of fingers mutants, puffies, twins, and baby mutants. You want to be stocked with as much ammo and explosives as possible.
The gym is infested with mutants so you will be attacked immediately. I recommend you poke around the area as you can pick up energy drinks from the benches.
There is a pool room, but this area is optional, although it’s a good idea to clear the area of enemies so none sneak up on you later.
Once you finish the gym area, move to the VR Pod room. This area has more fingers and twins mutants roaming around, so be careful. You must reach the second floor to get to the Guest Keycard.
You’ll be able to pick up the Guitar, a melee weapon, from the bar. It deals decent damage and plays a wicked animation once you’ve picked it up. The Guest Keycard is in the next room.
The Guest Keycard Location
You will find the Guest Keycard on the round glass table at the back of the club in the Entertainment Bunker.
You’ll know it’s right booth from all the dead bodies lying on the couch. You can exit the club by returning to the entrance and taking the long lit-up corridor.
FAQs
Question:Â Can Demons Spawn on the Surface in Sons of the Forest?
Answer:Â After completing the Sons of the Forest story, you can stay on the island or leave with Timmy and Eric Leblanc. If you choose the latter, there is a chance that demons will spawn on the surface.
Using the cross, the demons are easily fought off; however, they become increasingly dangerous in groups. You won’t be able to kill them with conventional means, meaning all other weapons do not affect them.
Question:Â How do you get the Revolver in Sons of the Forest?
Answer:Â The Revolver is found in Maintenance Bunker C, on the golf course northeast of the map.
The Revolver deals significantly more damage than the 9mm pistol, but you can’t upgrade it, but it only loads six rounds at a time. Despite being a revolver, it loads 9mm rounds; you’ll save more ammunition with the Revolver.
Question:Â What is the Difference Between Slug and Buckshot Ammo in Sons of the Forest?
Answer:Â The Shotgun in Sons of the Forest can be loaded with Buckshot Shells for close-range attacks or Slug Ammo for medium-range attacks.
If you want to change ammo types, look towards the ground with the Shotgun equipped and select the prompt. Note that this will unload your Shotgun and load the other kind of ammo, meaning you will be defenseless for some time, but you can fire the Shotgun without fully loading it.
Sons of Sons of the Forest Keycard Locations: Final Thoughts
So there we are, all three keycards you can obtain in Sons of the Forest. Putting together this article, I realized that the number of critical items in Sons of the Forest is relatively lackluster, especially after playing System Shock, where you must collect over eight Access Cards.
That said, the game is in Early Access, and as Endnight Games adds new patches to the game, so will the number of critical items and caves.
As it stands, The Forest has way more caves that are both longer and more dangerous. It’s a shame that we will have to wait a while before we can get a full Sons of the Forest experience.
There is a ton of potential for the game, though, as a wicked thought came to mind while I swam through the flooded hydroponic rooms of the Food and Dining Bunker. This area is intriguing, but there isn’t any threat to the player.
What if the developers added aquatic mutants into the game? It would sure as hell make this area a lot more tense!
Nevertheless, you may put off collecting the keycards until you have enough firepower and supplies; however, I suggest you make this your primary objective as soon as the helicopter crashes.
You’re on a timer; the more days that pass, the more dangerous the island becomes, and the caves and bunkers contain everything you need to survive, so get out there and explore!
