Weapon Modding and zombie slaying are easily the most fun and best parts of Dead Island 2. With an abundance of Weapon Mods and Perks available, you can take a worn-down machete and make it shine.

You can create some monstrous zombie-slaying weapons by using weapon mods that may even cause undead second guess looking for a snack. There are weapon mods that liquify zombies with toxic Caustic-X acid, to mods that electrify and stun zombies.

Using the right weapon mod for weapon is key, and having a diverse set of modded weapons in your inventory is essential for survival.

The last thing you want is fighting against a Putrefied Slobber with nothing but Liquifying weapons on your weapon wheel, as you’ll have no other option than to run, and thats a situation you don’t want to be in.

Modifying your weapons with the best quality mods will take time, as weapon mods are unlocked by picking up weapon mod Blueprints hidden across Hell-A and completing Side Quests and Story Missions.

I’ve killed tens of thousands of zombies in my Dead Island 2 playthroughs and scoured every nook and cranny in search of the best weapon mods. So without further ado, let’s explore the best mods you can get your zombie-slaying hands on.

From my zombie slaying experience, there is no best all-around Weapon Mod. However, each mod type has its uses and pitfalls. I explore the ins and outs of each mod below.

However, the key takeaway is that you should carry at least one of each weapon mod in your weapon mod. This is because many zombies have elemental resistances, and you will be constantly rotating through your weapons.

Electrifying Electrocutor Mods

Electrocutor Weapon Mods are the bread and butter of zombie slaying.

The first Weapon Mod you will acquire in the game is given to you by Sam B himself during the “Call the Cavalry” Main Story quest.

If it’s pointy and sharp, you can install the Electrocutor Mod in the weapon:

• Knives
• Pikes
• Katanas
• Machetes
• Officer’s Swords
• Claws

I’ve had a blast with these electrified weapons. However, from my experience, the Knife weapon type gets the best value from the Electrocutor Weapon Mod. The Knife has a very short range.

Being a headhunter weapon, it’s great for taking out singular targets. However, you can quickly become swarmed by zombies; the Electrocutor Weapon Mod allows you to electrify and stun zombies. Moreover, electricity will chain to any zombies that get too close.

Electrocutor Weapons have saved my bacon more times than I can count, especially while traveling through the Brentwood Sewers, where bursters and zombies lurk in the water.

However, one swipe at the water and ZAP! All the zombies in the area get burnt to a crisp by electricity.

Ranged weapons also benefit from the Electrocutor Weapon Mod, but I’d argue that they fair less than their melee counterparts. This is because the electrical ripple that pops from the barrel can mess with your aim.

Scorching Cremator Mods

The Hell-A military may lead you to believe that the best way to dispatch zombies and infected bodies is by dissolving them with Caustic-X. However, from exploring the Brentwood Sewers, we know that this has had horrifying consequences.

You can’t beat old-fashioned fire to lance the zombie infection from the Hell-A streets and beaches of Hell-A.

Cremator Weapon Mods increase the base damage of your weapon and apply an igniting effect that burns zombies, which can spread to nearby zombies if they step into spilled oil or fuel.

You can cause some serious damage using a Cremator modded weapon with explosives. However, you are equally at risk of being knocked back by an explosion and getting caught in flames.

This makes easily thrown weapons like the Cleaver, Katana, and Machete great for makeshift ranged weapons to blow up red barrels and ignite fuel cans.

A long list of weapons supports the Cremator Weapon Mod, making it one of the most useful weapon mods in the game. However, it also suffers from many enemy resistances.

You won’t be using the Cremator Mod in late-game crafting since, by this point, you will be able to acquire the Krakatoa, Party Starter, and Red Dragon Legendary weapons that feature this fire-igniting mod.

There are Ranged Cremator Weapon Mods available however, from my experience, you’re better off saving this type of elemental damage for melee weapons, as the effects can mess with your aim.

In addition, using this mod significantly lowers the types of zombies you can attack.

Liquifying Liquidator Mods

The Liquidator Weapon Mod weaponizes Caustic-X in a face-melting attack that will increase the base damage of your weapons and apply the Melting effect to zombies dealing Caustic damage and lowering the zombie’s resistance to Shock and Fire damage.

As a result, the Liquidator Weapon Mod has the potential to be the best weapon mod in the game. You can deal massive damage if you apply the Melting effect to zombies and switch over to a weapon equipped with either the electrocutor or Cremator weapon mod.

I highly recommend you apply this combination to Apex Zombies and bosses if you get overwhelmed.

The combination is so good that zombies will melt before your very eyes. This is why I’m screaming for Dambuster Studios to add New Game + or a new difficulty setting reminiscent of Borderlands; we need stronger zombies to keep up with the raw damage of our weapons!

The Liquidator Weapon Mod may be overpowered, but it has one pitfall. There is a long list of zombies that are immune to Liquidator-modded weapons, so you won’t be able to get away with melting your way through the game:

Liquidator-modded ranged weapons can be extremely powerful since you can apply the Melting effect to zombies before they can reach you. This lets you finish them off with a Cremator or Electrocutor modded weapon.

Superior Ranged Liquidator Weapon Mod		The Superior Ranged Liquidator Weapon Mod is obtained by unlocking Nikki’s Bounty Reward Lockbox in Beverly Hills. You must kill the Butcher named Target Practice to acquire Nikki’s Prize Key to open the lockbox in her house.

Jaw-Cracking Impactor Mods

Impactor-modded weapons are a force to be reckoned with, literally, as the Impactor mod increases not only the base damage of your weapon but also the Force of the weapon.

The force of a weapon determines how much stability damage the zombie takes. Hit a zombie with enough force, and the zombie will become vulnerable, causing them to fall to the ground dazed, immobile, and susceptible to more damage.

Impactor-modded weapons apply an additional disabling effect called trauma. Once a zombie becomes thoroughly traumatized, it will become immobilized in this state, and the Impactor Mod causes a mini-explosion that flings zombies into nearby swarms and walls, dealing massive damage.

You can only install the Impactor weapon mod to weapons with the blunt weapon profile. So weapons like Baseball Bats and Sledgehammers.

You can have some serious fun installing the Melee Impactor Mod in a Frenzy Nightstick, as you can unleash a barrage of attacks sending hordes of zombies flying.

Bulldozer weapons are extremely effective, too, as these weapons deal extra damage and always strike with a critical hit from heavy attacks, causing you to inflict even more stability damage.

The Impactor Weapon mod will turn any Assault Shotgun into an Apex Zombie Elephant Gun. I highly recommend using the Ranged Impactor mod if you struggle with fighting against Apex Zombies and variants like the Firestorm Slobbers or Butchers.

This, combined with the Hazardous perk, will allow you to kill the toughest zombies in a couple of shots. With this combo, you can deal way over four and a half thousand damage. (I’ve created a monster!)

You must kill Nadia, the named Screamer in the Metro, to acquire the key to unlock the lockbox and acquire the “Missing: Nadia” Side Quest from the Serling Hotel in Ocean Avenue. You won’t get access to the “Missing: Nadia” Side Quest until you’ve completed all previous Missing Side Quests.

Pulverising Puncturator Mods

The Puncturator Weapon Mod is one of my favorite weapon mods in the game. It makes your weapons look brutal, increases damage, and applies the Bleed effect to zombies. An effect that causes zombies to take damage over time.

The Puncturator Weapon Mod goes head to head with the Mutilator Mod as the best weapon mod for Frenzy weapons with high attack speed. The more your land hits, the faster your following attacks become; combined with the bleed effect, it allows you to shred through zombies like paper ribbons.

Like most weapon mods in Dead Island 2, you will encounter zombies immune to bleed damage and Puncturator weapons.

Are all zombies that are immune to Puncturator-modded weapons. As a result, it’s best to keep these weapons benched while in the Venice Beach area since this area has a high number of Spiky zombies spawning in the area.

The Ranged Puncturator weapon mod is the all-time best weapon mod type to install in your Rapid-Fire guns. as these guns become more accurate as you land consecutive hits and, for a brief time, land consecutive critical hits.

Your vision is less obstructed by mod effects with the puncturator weapon mod, plus the visual effect of blades whistling through the air is the icing on top of this Halloween-themed cake.

Shredding Mutilator Mods

Mutilator Weapon Mods are among the best weapon mods for Frenzy weapons. This is because attacks from Mutilator-modded weapons gain a physical damage boost and apply the Weakened effect to zombies, granting you stamina regeneration for landing every successful blow.

This makes the Mutilator Weapon Mod perfect for Frenzy weapons with high attack speed and critical hit chance. As a result, this weapon mod has a niche spot amongst the other weapon mods.

It’s one of the best choices for Claws, Brass Knuckles, and weapons with the Maiming Weapon Profile, as you can synergize the weakened effect with limb dismemberment to regain even more stamina.

The Mutilator Weapon Mod is hands down the best mod to use while playing Dani, as she has the most stamina out of all playable Slayers. You will likely always have Heavy Attacks if you use Frenzy weapons and synergize her innate abilities.

Since pulling a trigger requires no stamina, you must avoid installing the Ranged Mutilator Weapon Mod in your firearms. You don’t get the same value as a melee weapon. No stamina is being spent. Therefore, I recommend equipping the Ranged Puncturator Weapon Mod instead.

The Mutilator Weapon Mod does have one inherent advantage over the other mods on this list. There are no zombie types or variants that are immune to Mutilator damage.

Riot-Gear Zombies may have armor. However, it can be knocked off after consecutive hits. Moreover, don’t get confused with Spiky Runners and Walkers. These zombies are immune to Bleed effects, making them immune to the Puncturator mod.

Therefore, I always carry a Mutilator-modded weapon in my inventory in case my other weapons are ineffective. Which, believe me, happens all the time.

Think of Dead Island 2 as a horrifying zombie apocalypse version of Pokemon battling. Now there’s an unforeseen video game connection!
