Primal Fear Ark Guide

Primal Fear Ark Guide – The Most Intense Mod On The Workshop

Ark: Survival Evolved is suspenseful enough without Primal Fear, so imagine my friend’s surprise the first time they played Ark: Survival Evolved and were met with a Primar Fear version. True story! They thought that some of the strongest dinos in this survival game were original in vanilla Ark. I have to say, it definitely made them better at surviving than most players. As for me? I love Primal Fear whenever vanilla Ark gets old, but not everyone does.

That’s why I thought it was time to create a Primal Fear Ark guide, so you can finally decide if it will be the right choice for your server. This isn’t a small mod that is easy to miss. This is a mod that changes the course of the game. I’ll do my best to explain Primal Fear and give you all the details. But don’t worry if you add it and back out a day or two later. The mod is simply not for everyone.

Primal Fear: Abridged

  • Enhanced variants of creatures
  • Armor, saddles, and more made with those creature’s carcasses
  • Tiered creature system
  • Tiered kibble system
  • Summonable bosses
  • A constant foreboding feeling

What Is Primal Fear in Ark: Survival Evolved?

Surviving

Primal Fear is a mod in Ark: Survival Evolved that adds alternate versions of creatures. It works on a tiered system. In order to tame one type of creature, you need eggs from the previous tier.

This is perfect for completionists who want to try everything as well as those who tend to skip over important parts and want to be forced to take things step-by-step.

Along with a tiered system, Primal Fear has extremely strong wild creatures. Though some are only a bit stronger than vanilla creatures, others are almost 50 times stronger.

This isn’t as strong as the exclusive bosses in Primal Fear that you can summon late game, but they are strong enough to keep you on your toes even on a PvE server.

How To Unlock Primal Fear

If you know how to add mods to your game, then you already know how to add Primal Fear. To add the mod to a server, you need to be the owner of a server.

If you’re not the owner, but the mod has been added by them, then it will automatically install once you start up the server. However, there is a way to speed up the process.

Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Open Steam
  • Step 2: Go To Ark: Survival Evolved
  • Step 3: Click On Workshop
  • Step 4: Search “Primal Fear”
  • Step 5: Click Subscribe On The Mod

Creatures In Primal Fear

The creatures in Primal Fear are the same creatures that vanilla Ark players are accustomed to, with two major changes. The creatures are much stronger and you need to tame them in a certain order. To better understand what I mean, let’s break them down.

Toxic – x3

Toxic creatures are the lowest tier creatures in Primal Fear. They are three times stronger than vanilla creatures and have a 7% chance of spawning with the base mod.

Toxic creatures have a secondary Torpor attack, making them good for knocking creatures out. Taming Toxic creatures is the same as taming non-toxic creatures only you need Toxic Kibble.

Toxic Kibble

Toxic Kibble

  • 1 × Egg
  • 1 × Spoiled Meat
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 5 × Narcoberry
  • 2 × Rockarrot

Alpha – x5

Alpha creatures are five times stronger than vanilla creatures, or nearly twice as strong as Toxic creatures. In order to tame an Alpha creature, you need to tame and harvest toxic creatures.

Alpha Kibble

  • 2 × Citronal
  • 1 × Cooked Meat
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 5 × Mejoberry
  • 1 × Toxic Blood
  • 1 × Toxic Egg

Elemental – x7.5 or x14

Elemental creatures can be basic or advanced. Basic Elemental creatures are one step up from Alpha creatures with 7.5 times the stats of vanilla creatures. But advanced Elemental creatures are nearly twice as strong as basic ones with 14 times the stats of vanilla creatures. The advanced ones are Light and Dark, the basics are Ice, Fire, Electric, and Caustic.

Elemental Kibble

Elemental Kibble

  • 3 × Alpha Blood
  • 2 × Alpha Egg
  • 5 × Amarberry
  • 1 × Cooked Prime Meat
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 2 × Savoroot

Elemental Advanced Kibble (Light and Dark Creatures)

  • 5 × Amarberry
  • 1 × Apex Blood
  • 2 × Apex Egg
  • 2 × Caustic Feather
  • 2 × Fire Feather
  • 2 × Electric Feather
  • 2× Ice Feather
  • 1 × Cooked Prime Meat
  • 2 × Savoroot
  • 5 × Fiber

Apex – x10

Apex creatures are stronger than basic Elemental creatures but weaker than advanced Elemental creatures. These creatures have a 3.5% chance of spawning, so at this point, it’s more difficult to move on.

Apex Kibble

Apex Kibble

  • 2 × Longrass
  • 1 × Cooked Meat Jerky
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 5 × Tintoberry
  • 3× Alpha Blood
  • 2 × Elemental Egg

Omega x13

Omega creatures are very unique. They have four random stats after taming them and after they are born, they find a random adult with the same type to be their adoptive parent.

This isn’t the same as imprinting as the other creature will determine the Omega’s stats. When the baby is born, there’s a 2% chance it will be a stronger Black Omega.

Omega Kibble

  • 3 × Apex Blood
  • 2 × Apex Egg
  • 1 × Caustic Feather
  • 1× Cooked Meat Jerky
  • 1 × Electric Feather
  • 2 × Elemental Egg
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 1× Fire Feather
  • 1 × Ice Feather
  • 2 × Longrass
  • 5 × Tintoberry

Fabled – x16

Fabled creatures are sixteen times stronger than vanilla creatures and have a less than 3% chance of spawning. Fabled creatures are one of my favorites because it isn’t too difficult to reach this tier, they’re quite strong, and they look amazing. Oh yeah, and there’s a Fabled Grifficorn. Need I say more?

Fabled Kibble

Fabled Kibble

  • 2 × Rockarrot
  • 1 × Prime Meat Jerky
  • 10 × Fiber
  • 20 × Mejoberry
  • 3 × Apex Blood
  • 2 × Apex Egg
  • 1 × Elemental Egg

Buffoon

Buffoon creatures are freaking terrifying. The Buffoon Ferox (which stays in large form) is the scariest creature in the expansion in my opinion. These creatures have explosives and go on rampages throughout their biome.

Special Kibble

  • 3 × Alpha Egg
  • 2 × Apex Blood
  • 1 × Apex Egg
  • 2 × Citronal
  • 5× Cooked Meat
  • 5 × Fiber
  • 5 × Mejoberry
  • 2 × Toxic Egg

Celestial x25

cele

Celestial creatures are one of the strongest tamable creatures in Primal Fear. Part of that is because you can make them even stronger by using an Ascension Item on them. To ascend a Celestial creature, put the item in their inventory and use the radial menu.

Celestial Kibble

  • 5 × Primal Blood
  • 10 × Fabled Blood
  • 5 × Fabled Egg
  • 1 × Omega Egg
  • 5 × Caustic Feather
  • 5 × Fire Feather
  • 5 × Ice Feather
  • 5 × Electric Feather
  • 10× Citronal
  • 10 × Longrass
  • 10 × Savoroot
  • 10 × Rockarrot
  • 50 × Mejoberry
  • 25 × Fiber
  • 5 × Cooked Prime Meat

Demonic x30

Demonic creatures are very powerful. You will need to kill the untamable Primal creatures in order to take them, just as you have to with Celestial creatures.

My favorite Demonic creature is the Demonic Thorny Dragon from the Scorched Earth expansion.

Demonic Kibble

  • 5 × Primal Blood
  • 10 × Fabled Blood
  • 5 × Fabled Egg
  • 5× Caustic Feather
  • 5 × Fire Feather
  • 5 × Ice Feather
  • 5 × Electric Feather
  • 10 × Citronal
  • 10 × Longrass
  • 10 × Savoroot
  • 10 × Rockarrot
  • 50 × Mejoberry
  • 25 × Fiber
  • 5 × Cooked Prime Meat
  • 1× Omega_Egg

Malin

ark

The Malin creatures aren’t exceptionally strong but they are unique. There are only two Malin creatures – Malin and Malin Pteranadon. The Malin is a pink Unicorn and the Malin Pteranadon is self-explanatory. These two creatures both require Special Kibble.

Elder

Elder creatures do not require special kibble. They are simply larger and a bit stronger than standard creatures. My favorite Elder is the Elder Moschops which is arguably the best starter creature in Primal Fear. They are easy to tame and ride like a boss.

Chaos x35

Chaos creatures are exceptionally strong yet can still be tamed with a Chaos Orb. You can’t create a Chaos Orb until you slay a Chaos or Spirit Guardian. Good luck getting one of these any time soon, creating a Chaos Orb is insanely difficult.

Chaos Orb

  • 1 × Celestial Kibble
  • 1 × Demonic Kibble
  • 3 × Demonic Soul
  • 1 × Elemental Kibble
  • 1 × Origin Blood
  • 50 × Primal Blood
  • 2 × Celestial Egg
  • 5 × Fabled Egg

Spirit x45

Spirit x45

Spirit creatures have the highest base stats of any tamable creature in Primal Fear. Imagining that power is difficult if you’ve never played Primal Fear. Even though they are the strongest, I’d want these creatures even if they were the weakest because they look incredible.

Spirit Orb

  • 1 × Celestial Kibble
  • 1 × Demonic Kibble
  • 3 × Demonic Soul
  • 1 × Elemental Kibble
  • 1 × Origin Blood
  • 50 × Primal Blood
  • 2 × Celestial Egg
  • 5 × Fabled Egg

Primal Tek

I see Primal Tek creatures as utility creatures because they are only 12 times stronger than vanilla dinos. However, they are at higher levels than other creatures and they don’t need to eat.

They don’t even use stamina or oxygen, so they can swim and run for all eternity. You can craft them in the Primal Tek Bench and add modules to give them special abilities. There’s even a Primal Tek Giga!

Items In Primal Fear

There are a few items exclusive to Primal Fear. Most of them are items created with what you gather from the Primal Fear creatures. You may put two and two together, but it doesn’t hurt to brush over the primary item types.

Armor And Weapons

weapon1

You can creature armor from what you gather from Alpha, Apex, and Primal creatures. These are terrific but the armor you get from Origin Creatures and Primal Fear bosses are literally unbreakable with extreme protection from the elements.

As far as weapons go, the Primal Pike and Spear are wonderful for knocking stuff out. But late game, you may get addicted to the Demonic and Celestial Swords.

Consumables

You can create upgraded Kibbles, Narcotics, Health Potions, and more on Primal Fear. Luckily, you don’t need a special chemistry bench, as the Primal Smithy works as a chemistry bench/mortar and pestle.

Crafting Help

The Primal Smithy should be the first thing you work towards as you need it to create the saddles, kibble, and more. You don’t need to build the Primal Refining Forge, Primal Industrial Forge, or the Primal Tek Bench for a while.

Saddles

Not all creatures in the mod need special saddles but many of them do. The tiers Toxic, Alpha, Apex, Fabled, Celestial, and Demonic have their own saddles that work for all creatures under that tier. However, the Malin, Malin Pteranodon, Elder Phoenix, and a few miscellaneous creatures need their own saddle that works only for that creature.

Summoners

Summoners

Summoners are bosses that you can summon. Some of them spawn randomly while others need a very special item to summon. Captain Black Boulder and Origin creatures spawn in the wild.

After you kill Black Boulder you can use the summon that you receive to summon a tamable version of him. He is a Rock Elemental with style. The other creatures are summons that you have to gather materials for first and they do not spawn in the wild. Trust me when I say this is a good thing.

These are bosses that you do not want to face in the wild. However, once you summon them, you can collect their egg and raise the child that hatches as your own.

  • Demonic Reaper Empress – a giant Reaper Queen that requires eight different Origin Tributes.
  • Celestial Indominus Emperor- a giant Indominus Rex that requires eight different Origin Tributes.
  • Guardians – Chaos or Spirit creature that requires a lot of blood, souls, feathers, and artifacts.
  • Pikkon the Creator – a terrifying, flying blob that requires Origin Tributes, souls, and Orbs.
  • Nova the Destroyer – the reaper counterpart to Pikkon.
  • Colossus – a Prometheus-inspired boss whose size is difficult to imagine.
  • Pikkon’s Revenge – a Tek boss that requires you to collect elemental medallions from Colossus bosses.

Primal Fear Expansions

Primal Fear is so huge that it has its own expansions. Though they may have new expansions in the future, as far as I know, they only have the boss expansion and map expansions.

Boss

The Boss expansion for Primal Fear spawns creatures like the Dodorex and the Dragon that are now tameable. Find them in Vanilla, Alpha, Apex, Primal, Chaos, or Spirit variants.

Map Expansions

You can get Primal Fear expansions for Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, and Genesis: Part 1. Each of these offers the creatures from these maps with special variants.

For example, in Scorched Earth, you can find Alpha creatures but you can also find a special Necro Wyvern. Check out our complete Ark Wyvern Guide.

FAQs About Primal Fear

Question: Are There Mods That Are Incompatible With Primal Fear?

Answer: Yes. Popular mods that cannot run with Primal Fear include The Volcano, Kraken’s Better Dino’s, Elemental Ark, and more. Check with the developers if you’re unsure if your mods are compatible.

Question: Is Primal Fear Scary?

Answer: That depends. As far as non-horror games go, yes Primal Fear is scary. But it isn’t a horror game. Survival games in general tend to be frightening but Primal Fear does take things to an entirely new level. Yes, I have jumped out of my seat multiple times playing Primal Fear.

Question: Do Developers Update Primal Fear Often?

Answer: Yes. Developers do a great job of keeping Primal Fear bug-free. They update it at least once a year. This is saying a lot as Ark mod teams tend to let their mods go for years at a time, often never revisiting them again.

How To Make Primar Fear More Enjoyable

Now, I don’t know about you, but Primal Fear is enough for me as far as combat and worry are concerned. So I do not play it on PvP servers. You can, but it would be quite stressful in my opinion.

If you want something else to make Primal Fear easier then I suggest these mods that will simply help you get rid of the small worries of Ark, enabling you to focus on Primal Fear.

  • Structures Plus
  • Auto Engrams
  • Better Reusables
  • Awesome SpyGlass
  • Ultra Stacks
